Construction work on the section between Paccot and Rochers de Naye to build the bases and allow the installation of the masts necessary for the new 1,500 V contact line.
An alpine project designed for tomorrow
Our ambition
A historic line. A unique destination. A new era.
MVR SA is undertaking a major transformation of the Montreux–Les Rochers-de-Naye line and its summit site. A large-scale project that combines railway mobility, alpine experience, quality hospitality and the preservation of an exceptional natural environment.
By 2029, new panoramic trains, modernised infrastructure and a redesigned summit site will offer a smoother, more accessible and more spectacular experience — from the heart of Montreux to the ridges of Rochers-de-Naye.
At the summit, the ambition is clear: to create a genuine alpine refuge, open to nature, welcoming year-round, capable of receiving visitors in the best conditions while respecting the fragile balance of the site.
Our vision
Rochers-de-Naye will offer a complete journey: the welcome in the city, the panoramic ascent, the arrival at the summit, the alpine refuge, the discovery of preserved nature, then the descent towards Montreux. An experience loop designed for visitors, line users and all the region's inhabitants.
The objective: to make the mountain more accessible, more comfortable and more attractive, without losing what is essential: the calm, the raw beauty of the landscape and the rare feeling of arriving somewhere apart.
Rochers-de-Naye is not a destination like any other. At over 2,000 metres altitude, the site offers an exceptional panorama over Lake Geneva, the Jura and the Alps, in a sensitive natural environment.
The project has been designed to accompany this reality: to enhance nature without overloading it, to guide visitors without artificialising the site, to improve the welcome without erasing the authenticity of the place.
The modernisation of the line, visitor flow management, priority access by train and light summit facilities all respond to the same requirement: to allow as many people as possible to experience Rochers-de-Naye, while respecting what gives it its strength.
The transformation of the Montreux–Les Rochers-de-Naye line responds to an essential need: to offer more frequent, more reliable, more comfortable and more inclusive access.
In collaboration with local authorities and public transport partners, MVR SA plans an enhanced service, reduced journey times, modernised stations and an increased capacity of around 50%.
This development will benefit both visitors and regular line users. It will make it possible to better connect Rochers-de-Naye to the regional and national rail network, while strengthening a leisure offer accessible without a car from the Lake Geneva region.
Reinventing Rochers-de-Naye also means ensuring the longevity of a historic line inaugurated in 1892 and an iconic tourist site of the Riviera.
The project mobilises significant investments, cutting-edge technical expertise and numerous public, economic and tourism partners. It aims to guarantee infrastructure reliability, quality of service, the attractiveness of the offering and the viability of the site in the long term.
Beyond modernisation, the aim is to build a balanced model: useful to local residents, attractive to visitors, beneficial to the region and respectful of the territory that hosts it.
Project - Montreux-Rochers-de-Naye
Designed by Pininfarina, the new rolling stock will open a new chapter in the history of Rochers-de-Naye. Their design combines contemporary elegance, travel comfort and respect for the line's railway heritage.
The large glazed surfaces will offer a spectacular immersion in the landscape, between the shores of Lake Geneva, pastures, forests, cliffs and alpine ridges. A central panoramic carriage will further reinforce this sensation of ascending towards an extraordinary place.
Inside, wood, ergonomic seats, more generous spaces and connected information systems will create a warm, precise and comfortable atmosphere. From Montreux, the journey will begin.
In 45 minutes from the palm trees of Lake Geneva to the spectacular cliffs of the Alps
The new trains will run with journey times reduced by 15 minutes between Montreux and Rochers de Naye, making the mountain even more accessible while offering a significant time saving for regular users of the line.
Infrastructure improvements have been carefully organised so that renovation works can increase the capacity of the line. A 30-minute service becomes possible on the entire line between Montreux and Rochers de Naye while maintaining all current stops.
The new trains, stations and summit welcome facilities have been designed to provide 'barrier-free' access from 2029. The Rochers de Naye experience becomes accessible to people with reduced mobility without constraint.
By 2029, the line will be equipped with the most modern safety standards, including an unprecedented digital operating system for a mountain railway.
Increased power in the contact lines and modernised switches will significantly improve the reliability and efficiency of the network.
The new trains are panoramic, air-conditioned, quieter with connected passenger information systems. Seats are more spacious and seat reservation becomes possible.
Summit project
In the heart of the Gruyère Pays-d'Enhaut Regional Natural Park, the natural hollow of Rochers-de-Naye forms a rare, spectacular and peaceful setting. Accessible only by train or on foot, the site offers a direct relationship with the mountain: the silence, the altitude, the light, the flora, the ridges, the panorama.
The summit project aims to strengthen this experience without altering it. It is not about building an artificial destination, but about revealing the power of the place, improving the welcome and organising uses to preserve the site's balance.
Currently being created at the summit of Rochers de Naye, here is how they have been designed:
Create a peaceful refuge site, in the midst of natural alpine elements.
Preserve the natural heritage, showcase what nature offers us with a minimum of artifice.
Offer a series of accessible and spectacular experiences, welcoming and personalised, seasonal and year-round.
Optimise the management of visitor flows in order to enhance the experience and preserve the site.
The new Rochers de Naye station is spacious and welcoming throughout the year, with platforms ensuring good flow even at peak times. The semi-underground tracks improve comfort and allow trains to be stabled off-season.
On the upper floor, a regional wood hall offers a warm space, open to the alpine landscapes, ensuring visitor comfort whatever the weather conditions.
The facilities at the summit of Rochers de Naye are light and designed to enhance nature, guiding visitors towards developed spaces with a concern for preservation.
The station hall connects signposted trails adapted for all audiences. The site offers a variety of facilities (an amphitheater, a botanical garden, an orientation map, and activities) that are accessible year-round and, where possible, adapted for people with reduced mobility.
At 2,042 m altitude, the summit offers an exceptional panorama over Lake Geneva, the Jura and the Alps, accessible via a more steep path.
The modern station integrated into the landscape provides access to the Naye alpine refuge, fitted out inside the historic building constructed in 1892.
On the ground floor, a mountain restaurant with a convivial atmosphere offers travellers simple but quality dishes, favouring local and seasonal produce.
On the upper floor, the Naye mountain hut offers comfortable accommodation allowing you to enjoy the unique mountain atmosphere after the departure of the last train, between sunset, starry night and sunrise the following morning.
Construction sites
An approach prioritising sustainability and the enhancement of this line's unique heritage
The Rochers de Naye line was inaugurated in 1892. Running along the hillside, the line rests on numerous period retaining walls.
The MVR SA teams are tasked with bringing the line up to current safety and reliability standards, in compliance with the Federal Office of Transport (FOT) standards. Particularly innovative construction techniques make it possible to achieve the high level of reliability required while preserving the historic heritage of the line.
The weight supported by the retaining walls is controlled; they are sometimes reinforced but all remain in place. The iconic Planches bridge, at the exit of Montreux, is also being reinforced without being replaced. The halts are likewise maintained and equipped to reach the level of service desired by travellers.
